BC Adolescent Health Survey

The BC Adolescent Health Survey (BC AHS) is a province-wide survey administered to youth in Grades 7 to 12 every 5 years since 1992. The survey gives an evidence base of youth health trends, emerging issues, and risk and protective factors for healthy development.

Adapted versions of the survey are administered to youth whose experience may not be captured in the BC AHS including youth in custody, homeless and unstably housed youth, and youth in alternative education programs. LEARN MORE

HELP SHAPE THE 2028 BC AHS

Suggest a question or topic!

It is important for each cycle of the BC AHS to reflect the current issues affecting youth health in the province. As we prepare for the 2028 BC AHS, we would like to hear your thoughts on what should be included in the survey.

2023 BC Adolescent Health Survey

Around 38,500 youth aged 12–19 in 59 of BC’s 60 school districts completed the 2023 BC AHS. The survey was developed in consultation with young people, parents, and other experts in youth health. It was pilot tested with diverse young people in communities across BC before being administered by public health nurses and allied health professionals to students in mainstream public schools in the spring of 2023.

Engaging youth in the findings

Throughout our work, McCreary seeks to meaningfully engage young people in the research and decisions which affect them. We do this through interactive workshops, supporting youth advisory and research groups, and other community engagement projects. Below are resources developed with and by young people to engage with findings from the 2023 BC AHS.

McCreary has developed a workshop curriculum for teachers, nurses, youth workers, and other adult allies to engage youth in the 2023 BC AHS findings.

Led by the Youth Advisory & Action Council, the Youth Action Grant program provides up to $750 for projects led by BC youth aged 12–19 that address BC AHS findings.

A Research Slam is a fast-paced event where young people interested in learning about community-based research come together over a short period of time to do research on a particular youth health topic.

McCreary took the results of the 2023 BC AHS back to youth across the province for their perspectives on the findings. This report shares a summary of those conversations.

Written and performed by a group of young BC artists, this song brings voice to what youth shared in the 2023 BC AHS. This music video was prepared for the launch of the 2023 BC AHS provincial report.

The Youth Advisory & Action Council created a series of zines to share data and reflect on important topics affecting youth in BC, including stress, sleep, friendships, and extracurricular activities.

PHOTOVOICE: Protective factors

For the 2023 BC AHS launch event, the Youth Health Ambassadors participated in a photovoice project to explore factors that promote youth health and well-being.

PHOTOVOICE: Physical activity

To encourage physical activity among youth, the Youth Advisory & Action Council led a photovoice project about the role of exercise in their lives, and the activities they most enjoy.
